GRREC presents...the Teaching American History Grant

In June of 2006, the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative was awarded a three-year $900,000 federal grant to lead seventeen school districts, the Kentucky Humanities Council, Western Kentucky University's Department of History, and the Kentucky Library/Museum through a professional development program focusing on American history.

The ultimate goal of We Hold These Truths is to increase student achievement in American history and Social Studies by increasing teacher content knowledge and use of alternative teaching strategies. The professional development grant targets 8th grade teachers from seventeen participating school districts.

Teacher participants will receive 18 days of professional development annually which includes some of the following components and topics: a 2-week institute, travel to historic sites, History Alive training, Chautauqua training, digital storytelling, and implementing literature into the history classroom. Teachers will work in learning teams to design lesson plans, artifact trunks, digital photostories, and literature activities which will be used as resources for teachers in the GRREC area.
