The Autism Site Logo

For too long it has been assumed that autism is a tragedy, a disorder that leaves just a "shell" of a person.  Click the logo above to see five members of the autism community come forward to tell you that they can do anything and everything neurotypicals can do, they just do it a little differently. Spread Autism Awareness, stop the spread of myths!

The PASS Program serves both general education students whose behavior problems have identified them at-ris and students who have been identified by special education as Emotionally/Behaviorally Disordered (EBD).  The goal of the PASS program is to provide supports and services, enabling them to stay in the general curriculum. The program incorporates: Positive Behavior Supports, Scientifically based research practices and interventions and student placement in mainstream settings where there is access to the general curriculum and highly qualified teachers.

Monitoring Documents for FBA

Below are monitoring documents that can be used for gathering data for the Functional Behavior Assessment.  These forms can be completed by all teachers/adults involved with the student being assessed. A Functional Behavioral Assessment looks beyond the behavior itself. The focus when conducting a FBA is on identifying significant and specific social, affective, cognitive, and environmental factors associated with the occurrence (and non-occurrence) of specific behaviors.

Social Skills

Social skills are those communication, problem-solving, decision making, self-management, and peer relations abilities that allow one to initiate and maintain positive social relationships with others. Deficits or excesses in social behavior interfere with learning, teaching, and the classroom's climate. Social competence is linked to peer acceptance, teacher acceptance, inclusion success, and post school success.

Job and Transition Fair General Information

 Date: March 23, 2012
Time: 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Place: Bowling Green Technical College, 1845 Loop Drive, Bowling Green, KY

Student Registration: All student preregistration is due by September 30, 2011. Registrations received after that date will not be accepted, including those who are registering for exhibits and activities only. Students who have registered for contests and do not come on the day of the fair will cost their team three points for each student who does not come. We have to schedule students with interviewers and exhibitors booths so registration is very important.

Contest Entry Mailing Deadline: Wednesday, December 15th, 2011 is the deadline for all contest entries (resumes, cover letters and job applications) and all names of all students registering for exhibits and activities only. Confirmation of your entries will be sent to your district by January 15th, 2012. If there is any discrepancy between our information and yours, you will have until January 31st, 2012, the Final Submission Deadline, to submit the corrected information. No entries will be accepted after this date.

Volunteer Recognition Certificates Deadline: If you are bringing student volunteers and would like to have a certificate noting the number of community service hours they earned during the fair, you can complete a spreadsheet and mail to me by Friday, December 15th, 2011. The spreadsheet form will be on our website.

Current Information: The most current information about the fair will be on our website: www.caveland.org. Please check the website for any questions you have as well as for any handouts or forms required for the fair. I will also send emails to everyone who is registered to keep you informed of new happenings. Remember to click on your “refresh” icon to update your website information.

Activities: Campus tours, exhibitors’ booths, recreational activities for all, breakout sessions and contests for resumes, cover letters, job applications and interviewing skills.

Break-out Sessions: We will again provide an opportunity for students focused on continuing their education at an institution of higher learning (community college, technical college, or four year program) to learn about the steps leading to a successful experience in higher education. Ms. Pam Bulle, disability services coordinator for Bowling Green Technical College (KCTCS), will present guidance information on this subject. We encourage students to come prepared to ask Ms. Bulle questions regarding the college experience.

We hope to duplicate last year’s break-out session on the Carl D. Perkins Vocational Training Center in Thelma, KY.  This presentation should be on everyone’s list if they are not considering college technical school training programs.  The Carl D. Perkins Vocational Training Center offers many training programs that are short term and are in demand.

Exhibitors’ booths: Students will go to exhibitors’ booths of their choice. Exhibitors will give a short presentation (7 to 10 minutes) about their services or employment opportunities and will distribute handouts. Students will have an opportunity to ask questions and then they will move to the next booth. You may want to have an extra teacher or parent in case you decide to split-up your group.

Please remember that these exhibitors and interviewers volunteer their time for the fair. Some must come in the night before (e.g., Carl D. Perkins Vocational Training Center is a 6 hour drive). Most of the exhibitors have a website where you and your students can become somewhat familiar with their services prior to the fair. You are encouraged to visit these booths and to have your students ask relevant questions. Let them know you appreciate them volunteering their time.

Door Prize Cards:  We have changed our procedure for door prizes.  Updated information will be given prior to the fair.

Awards: Trophies are awarded for the top three student winners in each category and medallions to the 4th and 5th place winners.  Medallions will be awarded to the top 10 students overall.  School trophies will be awarded for 1st to 5th place overall.  We expect to complete all scoring by noon on fair day.  However, if something goes wrong (sometimes technology fails), we will announce the winners later and send the trophies to your school.

ParkingBus parking will be available on-campus.

Handicap accessibilityAll of BGTC is accessible.

Lunch: Participants may purchase box lunches @ $7.00 each provided by Gina Walden.  POs may be made out to:

Simply Gina, 5520 Thomas Court, Bowling Green, KY 42101.

Pictures: We are planning to have group pictures made for each class again this year. The class photo area will be announced. You are responsible for getting your class to the photographer. We will not be scheduling these sessions this year. The photographer will be available from 8:30 until noon.

School Banners: Please bring a banner designating your school. Take the banner with you when your school is photographed so we will send you the correct picture. Also, we will utilize banners to identify your school during the awards ceremony and other activities as needed. The banner may be one your school already has available or may be created by your class.

Resumes: Please have students bring two copies of their resume in a file folder to the interview. Give one copy of the resume to the interviewer and the student has his/her resume for reference.

Interview Procedure: Student leaves the interviewer resume copy with interviewer. All copies are picked-up at end of interview period by volunteer. Resumes are not returned to students.

Program: A program with the day’s activities will be available on fair day.

Preparation

1. Work with students to help them identify their areas of interest and aptitude. Use career assessments, the student’s ILP (IGP) and student interviews to help them determine these areas.
2. Go over their career goals on their ILP (IGP); have them check their multi-year plan to see if their coursework will help them reach their goals; discuss what they can do if coursework and requirements don’t match.
3. Spend time with students helping them learn how to write a resume. The resume should be the student’s work, but the teacher should also carefully monitor it. Encourage students to become “resume” detectives and find errors before the resume is graded. In the “real” business world, resumes, cover letters and job application errors are not acceptable.
4. Resumes: Only use approved resume formats; resume wizards from Microsoft Word or other computer programs are not acceptable. Follow guidelines on resume handout.
5. Use the Internet for career guidance and to look up information about the employers. Students should show evidence that they have researched their company of interest.  Points will be given for evidence of research in the interview.
6. Have students practice job interviews with classmates. Answer common interview questions. Students may practice being relaxed but not too laid-back to be considered uninterested in the position.
7. Have students wear clothing appropriate for the interview and practice good hygiene. If you have students who are unable to afford appropriate interview clothing, develop ways to help them become resourceful in locating appropriate clothing. Some places to consider for assistance are: Goodwill Industries, St. Vincent de Paul, Salvation Army, garage sales, school PTO, school family resource centers, students’ family members, Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, local professional clubs such as Kiwanis and Rotary Club or a class fundraising project. One way to help these students look their best, as well as identify those in need of some help, is to have them bring their clothing to school prior to the fair. That way they can launder and iron their clothes and clean and polish their shoes with supervision not to mention the added benefit of having their clothing at school.
8. Positive outcomes can come from the fair if the time is used properly. Sample resumes, job applications, cover letters and interview skills are items that may be included in the student’s IGP/ILP. Also, preparation for this fair can address objectives on the student’s transition section of the IEP.
9. Have students send follow-up thank you notes to:

2012 Job and Transition Fair Committee
Caveland Educational Support Center
230 Technology Way
Bowling Green, KY 42101.

We will send copies to any businesses specifically mentioned in the letter.
