TASK: Planning Powerful Learning Middle & High School Classrooms
February 8, 2012 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM

Wednesday, February 8; Thursday, March 15; and Thursday, March 29

Student learning is the product of three factors:  what the teacher brings to the classroom, what the students bring in terms of schema and background, and finally, the actual content of the lesson. These come together in task.  How do teachers plan tasks that maximize learning?  What are the components of a powerful task?  Join John Antonetti for two days of designing and developing powerful, engaging student tasks for middle and high school students in all content areas.   While the work is complex, John will help us simplify the design process and use humorous anecdotes to illuminate the construction of optimal learning activities. Then join GRREC staff for a one-day follow-up to discuss and share implementation.

Day 1 and Day 2 Outcomes (with John Antonetti):

  • Discover how engaging qualities, cognitive demand, level of thinking and student engagement interact to build powerful task.
  • Analyze student work to look for the components of powerful tasks.
  • Create and share powerful learning tasks to be used back at home in the classroom.

Day Three Outcomes (with GRREC consultants Allison Bemiss and Sheila Thompson):

  • Review collected student work from the created tasks
  • Analyze implementation of student task
  • Determine next steps for continual improvement

NOTE:  Previous workshop experience with John Antonetti is not a prerequisite.
