Green River Regional Educational Cooperative was awarded a three year $4,466,755 grant to support five low-income, at-risk preschool centers in four school districts. The grant will continue through the 2009-2010 school year.

GRREC will support teachers as they transform their preschools into Centers of Excellence. Specifically, GRREC will provide guidance as these sites implement the following :

• A scientifically based curriculum that supports the age-appropriate development of oral language, phonological awareness, print awareness, and alphabetic knowledge
• Double the current classroom time, going from half day to full day and expanding into summer.
• Instruction guided by assessment
• A 200-hour professional development and coaching model to support staff.
• A family / community literacy plan to impact each child’s home environment.
• Align of preschools with existing Reading First programs (transitioning to kindergarten).

GRREC’s ERF project goal is to prevent reading difficulties throuch early, excellent, research-based instruction that will engage its three- and four-year olds and expand their early literacy skills.
